Third Generation (Grandchildren)

10. Bessie Louise Baker [71] (Charles "Chas" Edwin2, Daniel1) was born on 14 Nov 1882 in Vermont, USA, died in Mar 1903 in Iowa, USA, aged 20, and was buried in Des Moines, IA, USA.

11. Blanch Holabird Baker [266] (Charles "Chas" Edwin2, Daniel1) was born on 10 Jun 1887 in Cass, IA, USA and died in Feb 1902 in Iowa, USA, aged 14.

12. Cassius Holabird Baker [72] (Charles "Chas" Edwin2, Daniel1) was born on 11 Aug 1890 in Des Moines, Polk County, IA, USA and died in 1952, aged 62. The cause of his death was Suicide.

Cassius Holabird Baker was born on August 11, 1890, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

In 1900, at about age 10, He was living with his mother, father, and two older sisters at their home at 507 Sixth Street in Des Moines.

His sister Blanch died at age 5 in 1902 when Cassius was about age 12, His other sister Bessie died a year later when she was age 11.

Sometime before 1910, when Cassius was 20, his father abandoned the family. By then he was boarding in a private home with his mother and brother Ralph in the home of Mr. James M. Gaffney in Lynn City, Essex, Massachusetts.

Cassius' mother Mary died in 1918 when he was age 27.

On April 26, 1942, at age 51, Cassius registered for the WW II draft. He was then living at 1607 Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He listed his brother, Ralph, who then lived in Verdun, near Montreal Quebec, as his emergency contact. Where his brother was five foot ten inches and 140 pounds, Cassius was recorded at five feet, five and a half inches tall at 145 pounds with brown eyes, grey hair, and a light complexion.

Cassius died in 1952, at about age 61, apparently of suicide when he leapt out of a window of a tall building.

13. Ralph Holabird Baker [31] (Charles "Chas" Edwin2, Daniel1) was born on 18 Nov 1904 in Des Moines, Polk County, IA, USA and died on 26 May 1994 in Perley Hospital, Ottawa, ON, Canada, aged 89.

Ralph Holabird Baker was born on 18 Nov 1904 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

In 1910, when Ralph was age 5, he, his brother Cassius, and his mother Mary, were living as boarders in the house of Mr. James M. Gaffney in Lynn City, Essex, Massachusetts. Ralph's father, Charles ("Chas") was not with the family at that time. By that time, both of Mary's young daughters had died (Bessie at age 11 and Blanch at age 5). Mary's marital status was recorded as "Not Known", which probably reflected the uncertainty that Mr. Gaffney expressed to the census enumerator.

Ralph Cassius Baker, son of Ralph Holabird Baker, tells of how Ralph Holabird was orphaned in 1918, at age 14. This account is consistent with Ralph Holabird's mother's death in 1918 and his father's apparent abandonment of the family about a decade earlier. Ralph Cassius reported Ralph Holabird subsequently lived on a substantial monthly income provided by an aunt.

Ralph Holabird went on to work as a farm inspector for the New Jersey government. During this period, he travelled frequently to Montreal, Quebec. During one of these trips, he met Amy, his future wife.

On 11 Nov 1929, at age 24, Ralph married Amy in Montreal, Quebec.

Ralph subsequently worked as a travelling salesman for Ralston Purina. In 1934, at age 29, he became Stores Manager at the Montreal General Hospital, a position he held until 1954. In 1955, at age 50, he became Director of Purchasing and gradually retired from this role between 1969 and 1974, at about ages 64 to 69.

From 1934, Ralph and his family lived in St. Laurent, Quebec, near the Canadair building. In the fall of 1939, at age 34, Amy was hospitalized, and the family experienced financial hardship, losing their home in St. Laurent. During this period, his son Ralph stayed with Margie and Peter MacInnes, while his daughter Beverley lived with Winnie and Bill Taylor.

In Dec 1939, at age 35, the family moved to a second-floor flat on Jean Talon Boulevard in northeast Montreal, where they lived for about six months. On 1 May 1940, at age 35, they moved to another flat at 760 Brault Street in Verdun, Quebec, where they lived for 13 years.

In December 1943, at age 39, Ralph registered for the U.S. WWII draft. He was then still a US citizen. In his draft declaration, Ralph was recorded to be five feet ten inches tall with brown eyes, brown hair, medium complexion, and the tip of his left index finger was deformed. He declared his brother, Cassius, who was then living in Massachusetts, as his emergency contact. Ralph listed was then working in the stores department of the Montreal General Hospital at 66 Dorchester Street in East Montreal. The draft registration was recorded in Washington DC at the office for US citizens living abroad.

In 1953, at age 48, Ralph's children Ralph Cassius and Beverly assisted in purchasing his home at 605 47th Avenue in Lachine, Quebec, where Ralph and Amy lived thereafter.

Ralph and Amy had three children.

Ralph married Amy Catheline Johnson [30], daughter of Thomas Johnson [70]. Amy was born on 17 May 1907 in London, England and died in Sep 1991 in Montfort Hospital, Ottawa, ON, Canada, aged 84.

Ralph Holabird Baker and Amy Catheline Johnson were married by license on 11 November 1929 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the St. James the Apostle Anglican Church. The marriage was conducted by Al Mulholland, Assistant Minister. Witnesses were Kate M. Mc(illegible), Nate F. McLeod, and John P. Johnson.

Amy Catheline Johnson was born in England in 1907. When whe was about one year old, Amy immigrated to Quebec, Canada with her family.

Amy lived with her family at 468 8th Avenue, Hochelaga-Rosemont, Montr al, where she was part of an English-origin Anglican household.

On 11 Nov 1929, at about age 22, Amy married Ralph Holabird Baker in Montr al, Quebec.

By 1931, at about age 24, Amy lived with her husband in her parents' household, where her husband worked as a clerk and she did not have outside employment recorded.

Amy Catherine Johnson died on 10 Sep 1991 in Lachine, Quebec, at about age 84.
